• Engineering degree from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Nancy (1962).
• Bachelor degree in Philosophy (1964).
• Founder of Mathematical Morphology, with G. Matheron (1966).
• PhD thesis in Mathematical Geology, at the university of Nancy (1967).
• Doctorat d'Etat in Mathematics, at Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (1986).
• Since 1983, "Directeur de Recherche" (equivalent to tenured professor) and director of the "Centre de Morphologie Mathématique" at Ecole des Mines de Paris.

Current scientific activities :

Connexity for sets, functions and operators ; morphological treatment of colour ; development of Micromorph ; teaching at Ecole des Mines ; PhD thesis supervising.

Awards :

• Vice-president of the International Society of Stereology (1979-1983).
• ESCLANGON price, awarded by the French Society of Physics (1982).
• First award of the great price of the AFCET Society (French equivalent for IEEE) (1980).
• Chevalier of the National Order of Merit (1989).
• Doctor Honoris Causa of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain (1993).
• Founder of the International Society for Mathematical Morphology, and first president of this society (1993).
